UPCOMING EVENTS
The Appanoose County Conservation Board would like to invite you to the following upcoming events. All programs are free to the public unless otherwise noted. The ACCB offers a variety of educational programs to both public and private groups. To set up a program or for more information please contact naturalist Marty Muir.
APRIL
EARLY WILDFLOWER HIKE
Saturday, April 5th, 1:00 PM, Center 2000
Join the naturalist as we search the trails for some early spring wildflowers. Learn about these amazing plants as they defy the odds of survival. There is no charge to attend. This program involves mild hiking up and down steep and hilly terrain.
EVENING PRAIRIE BURN AND MOVIE
Saturday, April 5th, Dusk, Sharon Bluffs State Park
Join the ACCB as we light up the night sky! Learn about the valuable role fire plays in the prairie ecosystem. After the burn, come inside to the nature center for a viewing of "America's Lost Landscape: The Tallgrass Prairie" to learn more about the history of prairie in Iowa. This program may be postpoed due to weather conditions, call the office for updates.
SPRING OPEN HOUSE
Saturday, April 19th, Noon - 4:00 PM Center 2000
Come out to the ACCB's annual open house and see what's new. Free tree and shrub seedling will be given away and the 50th person through will receieve a free 5-7 Gallon potted tree to take home!
FREE MOVIE: AMERICA'S LOST LANDSCAPE--THE TALLGRASS PRAIRIE
EARTH DAY, April 22nd, 7:00 PM Majestic Theature Centerville
Everyone should plan on attending this FREE showing of America's Lost Landscape--The Tallgrass Priaire to wrap up thier Earth Day activities. The film tells the story of one of the most astonishing alterations of nature in human history. Upon settlement, 240 million acres of native tallgrass prairie was steadily transformed to cropland in the course of about 70 years. The film shows the drastic change in the landscape and the social impacts it had on Native Americans. Anyone interested in prairie or the history of Iowa should attend. FREE, FREE, FREE!!
SPRING CANOE FLOAT
Saturday, April 26th, 10:00 AM Sharon Bluffs Boat Ramp
Call the office today to reserve your spot on the spring canoe float on the Chariton River. We will be meeting at the boat ramp before being shuttled to the put-in on 493rd Street. You may use one of our canoes or bring your own. There will be a $5 per person(adults) charge for transportation. You must preregister w/ the ACCB to attend. Call the office for updates.
MAY
GPS WILDFLOWER HIKE
Saturday, May 3rd, 1:00 PM, Center 2000
Meet at the nature center by 1:00 PM to participate. We will be learning basic GPS navigation as we use the GPS coordinates to find different woodland wildflowers. We will have a limited number of GPS units so call today to reserve yours.
INTRO TO BIRD WATCHING
Saturday, May 17th, 8:00 AM Sharon Bluffs State Park
Join the Rathbun Lake Bird Club as they open your eyes to the world of birding. Lots of great information for the beginner and experienced birder alike. Free of charge, no preregistration required. Bring your binoculars if you have them.
YOUTH FISHING DERBY
Saturday, May 17th, Registration at Noon, Fishing from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM
Free fishing tournament for kids 15 and under. Prizes will be awarded. Rules meeting at 12:30 PM with fishing to follow at 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM. Meet at the shelter at Lelah Bradley for registration and rules meeting before fishing the reservoir. The ACCB will provide worms while supplies last, and fishing poles for those who dont have their own. Call the office for more information or to reserve equipment.
